Betty Draper

Betty Draper, now Elizabeth "Betty" Francis is a character on AMC's TV show Mad Men, is played by January Jones.  Portrayed as blonde, beautiful and somewhat emotionally immature, her character is beloved by women who watch the series and some say Draper looks a little like Grace Kelly.

Over the past few seasons Betty has been portrayed as a woman who has had to deal with her previous husband’s infidelity as she struggled to raise her children despite it all. Even after the divorce and remarriage to another man, the ex continues to badger her over the kids and the house.

She has had to adapt and overcome, with her character developing a harder shell and a sometimes icy personality. She is no longer the fragile woman she was in the first season and has had to learn through the death of her mother and her first marriage, how to survive in the “real world.”

Sometimes her methods have made her a disliked character, like when she abandoned her kids over the holidays last season or when she convinced her friend to have an affair, but even so, it’s sometimes hard to figure out what she must be thinking. At times she is seen as a horrible mother behind her facade of perfect hair and dress. A beautiful package all wrapped up that is really empty inside.

But is Betty truly that horrible, or is she just misunderstood and immature? Sometimes it is hard to figure out. She can appear as lost and frightened, lonely and deserted, yet at other times she can be a holy terror, a bitch no one wants to be around. Between seasons she has managed to change from a woman who kept her feeling inside, to one who is no longer the “perfect wife.”

A former model, her mother had always told her she had to maintain her appearance and her good looks. This makes a lot of what makes her who she is and she is apparently afraid to lose her youth and good looks. However, she has had to mature from this attitude into a woman more capable of fending for herself and surviving a divorce and learning how to rely on herself instead of a husband or family member.

She is woman that many viewers love to hate, but are addicted to watching every week to see what she does next. So, will the character of Betty Draper continue to mesmerize and grow as a person? Only time will tell on the Mad Men series.
